I selected this book because it was pretty short (8 hours of narration) and not too serious or depressing, even though it does take place in London after the first World War. It was a fun story, very British, narrated by a woman with a quite strong British accent who didn’t do men’s voices well but it didn’t really matter. This is the first book of a series of six books, and I know I’ll listen to one of these every now and then, in-between long and/or depressing and/or serious books.
The Right Sort of Man, by Allison Montclair, is the story of two women who decided to open a « marriage bureau » where they would match people. One morning, they learned that one of their recent female clients had been murdered, and one of their male clients was accused of having murdered the poor girl. The two women decided to do their own investigation to prove that their male client was not a murderer and that their marriage bureau was not matching innocent young girls with murderers.
Of course, both women have a complicated history, one whose husband was killed during the war and whose in-laws are awful to her, and the other one as an ex-special forces recruit who’s having a hard time letting go of that past. They are both smart and funny. My favourite character (and the most serious character in that story) was the psychiatrist.
I love British humour.
