J’ai entendu ce concerto (au Roy Thompson Hall) pour la toute première fois juste avant de quitter Toronto, en 2009. C’était le printemps, j’avais besoin d’énergie et de courage pour déménager à l’autre bout du pays, et ce concerto était parfait! Je l’adore toujours autant aujourd’hui!

About travelling, I have just ended the stirring journey through post-war Tokyo you enabled me to have thanks to the summary of « The Translation of Love » by Lynne Kutsukake you published on September 21, 2024 ( your 70th post ? ). Even if there is no « happy ending », there are some pieces of hope, e.g. Fumi’s sister is back, Aya’s father seems to get closer to his daughter….

Eventually, I read it in French and learned and cried a lot when reading it.
The book is well balanced. For example, being sent to a Canadian internment camp and then to Japan as it happened to Aya’s family is awful. I wasn’t aware of Canadians having behaved so cruelly, but then, there are the messages from her mother Aya found in her coat to light up Aya’s future.
And the other stories were all as interesting and moving as Aya’s.

I’m glad you liked it 🙂 I really like the « translator’s » story, too, and all the letters sent to MacArthur. (The US and Canada had camps for Japanese citizens and people of Japanese descent (even if they were US/Canadian citizens!) during WWII, it was horrible and shameful!)

Enfin je t’ai retrouvée grâce à Roz. J’avais bien vu tes commentaires à droite et à gauche, mais jamais eu l’idée de cliquer sur ton lien… Je viens de faire la rétrospective de l’année 2024, mais ça a été assez rapide, vu que je ne comprends pas l’anglais !!!
