The Residence

This new short (8 episodes) TV series was excellent. I was hooked right from the start and my sister got hooked, too, so we watched the last few episodes together while I was visiting her, last week. We both tried to guess who the killer was and both got it wrong!

The series just came out on Netflix, and the only reason I clicked on it is because the Australian Prime minister is played by an actor that I know from another series, so I was curious. I didn’t know any of the other actors, but they were all really good.

The premise is very simple: there was a State Dinner at the White House with the Australian Prime Minister, and the Chief Usher died at some point during the dinner. Detective Cordelia Cupp is investigating with the help of an FBI agent. Everyone is a suspect and is stuck in the White House during the investigation: the President and his husband, the (extremely annoying) President’s chief adviser, the social secretary, the assistant usher, the (horribly hilarious) President’s brother, the Head Butler, the housekeepers, the cooks, the (Swiss-German) Pastry Chef, the engineers, the Executive Chef, the carpenters, the gardeners, the mother-in-law of the President, the (hilariously sexy) Australian Foreign Minister, the Chief of Staff, the plumbers… And the story switches quickly between what happened before the dinner, the dinner itself, the murder, the post-murder interviews, and the congressional hearing that followed the investigation. It could be confusing but it’s extremely well done and easy to follow. And frankly hilarious.

The whole thing feels like a game of Cluedo (Clue, in English): who did it? The butler in the blue room with the candlestick? Or Colonel Mustard in the yellow room with the revolver? You get to visit the White House, the different rooms and floors and kitchens and basement offices, and you get to know all the people who work there, too, and what happens when presidents move in and out of the White House. You also get to learn a lot about birds, because Detective Cupp loves them and has a list of all the birds Theodore Roosevelt saw at the White House.

I am trying to not watch what everyone else is watching, to « resist the algorithm, » but I must admit that this was an excellent show, and my sister and I had a great time watching it (and commenting on it) together.
