This book by Sandra Perron was painful to read, but also amazing. It is the true story of a young woman who, in the 80s and early 90s dreamed of being in the military and ended up being the first Canadian woman in the infantry. Throughout her training and career, she faced terrible sexism, bullying, and even rape, but also met respectful, supportive, and wonderful friends and superiors. She served two tours in Bosnia and Croatia during the war there. In the end, she was forced out of the military. It’s the fascinating and tragic story of a really strong woman!
The book came out in 2017, and the movie (trailer below) just came out in Septembre 2025.
In Belgium, the recruitment of female volunteers started in 1975. To celebrate this fiftieth
this anniversary, a symposium took place at our Royal Military Academy in October. If you like, you can have a look at a summary of this meeting here:

Félicitations 🙂 Women were able to join the Canadian Forces before the 80s and 90s, but not in all branches of the military. I think the last area that they were able to join were in submarines, in 2001. Sandra Perron was the first woman in the infantry, not the military as a whole.
