Get Well Soon

Nothing beats an 8-hour car trip to the US (and 8 hours back to Canada!) when you want to get through a long list of books you’ve been wanting to read since forever!

This book had been in my to-read list for at least two years! Every chapter talks about a different type of « plague » that has killed a great number of people somewhere (Europe, the Americas, etc.). The author also discusses the good and bad decisions people (politicians in power and the common citizens) made during those times, and how that affected the outcome (length, number of deaths, future of the place, etc.) of that specific plage. It is extremely interesting and well researched.

I liked the humour that the author has, in spite of the seriousness of the topic, as well as her references to pop culture, as she often compares « reality » with what is portrayed in different movies. For example, she says, « the Roman army did X, which you can see well in the movie Gladiator, but the movie gets Y wrong… » She also makes references to politicians, music, books, television shows…

What’s really incredible in this book is Wright’s description of what will happen in the future. The book was published in 2017, but the way Wright describes « future plagues » is exactly what happened during the Covid19 pandemic with politicians, the vaccine, the misinformation, etc. It’s sad that humankind is so predictable!

The author has written other books that look really interesting, and I will definitely read some of them!

  1. You love Temperance Brennan stories, you enjoyed reading this book whose topic was some awful diseases. Wouldn’t you have preferred to work as a physician instead of running a writing centre at the university?
