An Astronaut’s Guide to Life

This book, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth (Guide d’un astronaute pour la vie sur terre), is not a romance or mystery novel, or even historical fiction. It’s a reflection on life and hard work, on how to achieve your dreams, and on the meaning of success and happiness.

Hadfield, a Canadian who studied at the university where I teach, became an astronaut at a time when it seemed impossible for Canadians to become astronauts. He shares his journey and explains how challenging it is to become an astronaut, the kinds of tasks astronauts perform when in space, and the many crazy problems they face.

The book is told with great humour and passion, and it’s narrated by the author himself, who has a fantastic voice! Even if you don’t want to become an astronaut, you should listen to (or read) this book, because it’s an inspiring story of perseverance, courage, humility, and humour in the face of life’s challenges.

And if you haven’t read The Apollo Murders by the same author, you really should—it’s a fun mystery novel about Russian and American astronauts on a top-secret mission to the moon in 1973!

You can also hear the author sing a very famous song there (which he really recorded while in space).

  1. This book sounds very interesting. Raphaël Liégeois, a man from Namur has been recently selected to take part in a long-duration mission aboard the ISS which will take place in 2026 and our country is proud of it.

    1. A man from Canada (Jeremy Hansen) has been selected for the Artemis II mission, in 2026, and Canada is also very proud of this, so I totally understand how Belgium can feel 🙂 (He was also a student at my university, so we are doubly proud, of course!)
